Do Extra Maths Games Improve Test Scores?

START stands for Schools Teaching Awareness of Randomised Trials.
Go To the STARt Website
We want to improve our test scores in Maths. We wondered how we could do this? Taylor had an idea that maybe extra maths games might help.

But how could we know for sure?
We agreed to test our theory using a randomised trial.
We decided to use the pupils in first, second and third class as guinea pigs.
We divided the classes into two groups, a test group and a control group. Then we decided to play a variety of maths games with the test group while the control group played board games.

Learn about randomised clinical trials

The first randomised clinical trial took place on a ship in 1747. James Lind, a surgeon on HMS Salisbury, carried out experiments to discover the cause of scurvy.

We used different games, including Bingo, Snakes and Ladders, Fishin' for Addition, Shoot the Stars and  Race to the Moon.

We also used interactive games on the Ipads and on the WhiteBoard.

We had a visit from START ambassador Shane Brennan.

Shane volunteered to visit our class and tell us all about clinical trials. He was very helpful in giving us ideas and setting us on the road to our own randomised trial.
